Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and moved to New York to pursue both his MFA at Pratt Institute. He began working for Condé Nast Magazines, then became Art Director for Random House and later, Creative
Director for HarperCollins.
He now has his own studio where he develops an array of projects from books, magazines, and typeface design, to branding and web site creation. He has received awards, from the AIGA, Art Directors Club, Communication Arts, Eye, Graphis, How, Print, Type Directors Club and Literary Market Place. Roberto speaks frequently to groups such as the Society of Newspaper Designers; the Association of American Publishers; University of College Designers Association; TypeCon; Type Directors Club; Art Directors Club, and the Publishing courses at Stanford University, Columbia University and New York University.
In 1999 he wrote “Bembo’s Zoo” for his daughter that was a finalist for the prestigious Newberry Award, and in 2007, “To All Men of Letters and People of Substance”, was published by David Godine Books.
