Many marketing people have done agency-side and client-side stints. Very few have been an award-winning copywriter, run marketing for a trillion dollar consumer and b2b brand, and run a 9-figure client account at a global ad agency. Bret has.
Bret is currently Managing Director of Brand Innovation at The Joey Company — a fast-growing, integrated advertising agency in Brooklyn's DUMBO about which AdAge said "the secret is out." Prior to joining The Joey Company, Bret was at JWT (J Walter Thompson) building the first-ever single P&L structure for the multi-agency team handling the HSBC business in North America. From 8 disparate and geographically diverse agencies, Bret created a cohesive and highly effective team. Among the award-winning work her team created is the HSBC “Soapbox” work that has garnered much press for its refreshingly honest tone.
Bret’s turn client-side was as SVP, Director of Marketing for Smith Barney Citigroup, one of the most venerable brands in Financial Services. Bret’s deep knowledge of consumer perceptions and behaviors allowed her to take this dormant yet famous brand and relaunch Smith Barney as a vital, progressive financial firm.
The creative side of the house is where Bret started, however, as a copywriter at legendary New York agencies like Grey and Lowe and Partners on brands like Seagrams, The Algonquin Hotel, Meridien Hotels, Dun & Bradstreet and Chase. A frequent speaker and author, teaching has proven to be Bret’s other calling: in addition to teaching in the Masters in Branding Program, she is a 200-hour certified Vinyasa yoga teacher.
She holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, and an MA from New York University, and shares her life with her husband, two children, the dog, the cat and her surfboard.
